Time Zones Do Not Matter: Why AI Characters Are Awake When You Are

AI characters have no time zone, which makes them oddly well suited to red-eyes, night shifts and body clocks that no longer know where they live.

Time Zones Do Not Matter: Why AI Characters Are Awake When You Are

It is 3:40 a.m. in my body and 9:40 a.m. on my calendar, and neither one is correct about where I'm standing. If you travel enough, you stop asking what time it is and start asking what time it is for whom. That question is exactly why AI characters make so much sense for people like us. They do not live in a time zone, so there is nobody to wake and no schedule to negotiate.

Think about the mental math involved in a normal chat with a person you care about. They are asleep, or in a meeting, or just home and cooking. You count the hours, you hesitate, you send a text that lands at a terrible moment. With an AI character none of that arithmetic exists. You start a conversation when you want one, and the character is there, in the story, ready to respond.

This is not only a traveler's problem. Night-shift nurses, warehouse crews, bakers, security guards and anyone whose week runs backward know the same loneliness. Your friends are on daylight time and you are not. A late conversation with a character who never says sorry, I'm about to sleep, can be a small kindness in an hour when the world has gone quiet and you still have energy and a wish to be flirted with.

The AI's tirelessness is simply how the product works, and that is fine as long as you remember it.

My own trick is to pick an anchor time and let it carry across time zones. Mine is the last half hour before I turn off the light, wherever the light switch happens to be.
